January-february 2026 is mainly dedicated to preparational work.
The unexpected outcomes are:
1 a highly intriguing chanson by Clemens non Papa published in 1556
(see my article on it. Warning: just speculations, but a nice read.)
2 a meeting with LEO non Papa (sic !)
appearing in the same book as Clemens non Papa in Nürnberg 1564. His ‘Deus meus es tu’ is the only work that is known of
him. Nothing is known about the man. Imagine, 1564, the famous Pope Leo X was already dead for 43 years.
The style of the motet is mid-16th century. Who was this guy who had the guts or the wit to imitate the great Clemens by
funnily adding a reference to a dead pope to his name? We’ll never know, but his motet for Passion Sunday is damn good,
that must be said. Here one may listen to the the first part.
3 a meeting with Gilles Bracquet
Another guy I met last week in an Antwerp music print, dating from 1556 was Gilles Bracquet. He was a priest, singing master, Sunday school instructor and music teacher at the church of St. Martin in Ieper (Belgium), in the fifties of the 16th century.
Being a man of the clergy withheld him not writing this frivolous song about the lovely girls of his hometown, 'Les fillettes d'Ypre',
praising all their fantastic assets.
The first program of the Egidius Kwartet contained Johannes Lupi's 'Les fillettes de Tournay'.
And true, those girls were of different, much naughtier kind.
Click here for a youtube of the Bracquet chanson. I'll post the Tournay girls later on. Patience.
