choirmaster amsterdam baroque choir
ASSISTENT TO TON KOOPMAN
|
In december 2015 Ton Koopman asked my to consider to become choirmaster of the Amsterdam Baroque Choir.
I was member of that choir since its founding in 1992. It was a big honour but a delicate one because I continued singing with the choir of which I became now the leader. But Ton insisted strongly, We had given many Bach courses together in Paris and every time he was surprised I provided him exactly the choir qualities he was looking for. The Ton Koopman vocal- and choir approach is a very particular language in itself. He tends to treat singers like instrumentalists and he likes them to articulate like them. I was familiar with his language and needs after almost 25 years doing concerts with him, both as a choirmember and as a soloist. I asked for a probation period: two productions, with an evaluation by him, the choir and myself afterwards. April 2016 I prepared the choir for the first time (JS Bach Oster Oratorium). Both Ton and my colleague-singers were very happy with it. After the second production (Haydn Nelson Mass) it was decided that I should take the job definitely. Since then Ton and I worked on a qualitly upgrade of the already magnificent and much admired ABC. I am grateful for his confidence. It is a privelege and a pleasure to work with him. It works, due to mutual respect, natural understanding and unconditional friendship. |
